Alkaline Water Antioxidant Properties

Alkaline water produced by a water ionizer has the ability to neutralize oxidants like hydrogen peroxide that at excessive levels causes premature aging and the onset of disease. The antioxidant properties of alkaline water have mostly been studied in laboratory testing, but preliminary clinical testing shows that alkaline water has a “sparing effect” on the antioxidant enzymes produced by the body. In clinical testing, people who drank alkaline water maintained higher levels of antioxidant enzymes than they had when before they started drinking alkaline water.

What gives alkaline water it’s antioxidant potential is the hydroxyl ion. The benefit of hydroxyl-rich artesian spring water has been known for centuries. Alkaline water from a water ionizer is also hydroxyl rich because water ionizers remove  acidic carbonate from tap water. Tap water contains mineral carbonates – calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. The calcium and magnesium in water are alkaline, and they are essential minerals that are good for your health. Carbonate, which is CO2 dissolved in water is acidic. It balances out the healthy benefits of the minerals in tap water. When a water ionizer removes the carbonate from water, the minerals react with water molecules, and gain a hydroxyl ion from them. This process makes alkaline water from a water ionizer very similar to artesian spring water. It is the hydroxyl ion in alkaline water that is responsible for alkaline water’s antioxidant potential. A water ionizer is the best way to get  minerals from water because you get all of the beneficial minerals, and none of the acidic carbonate.

Water ionizers use an electromagnetic process called electrodialysis to split water into two different streams: Alkaline water, with healthy minerals in it, and  acidic water with the dissolved CO2 in it. CO2 acidifies water, it turns it into a solution of carbonic acid. This is why, when you see a water ionizer running, there are two streams of water coming out.
