Alkalizing your water can turn it into one of the healthiest beverages on the planet – or turn it into a toxic drink that’s deadly for your heart. It all depends on how you alkalize it. Alkaline water has become a popular health beverage, with millions of people experiencing positive health benefits.
But just giving water an alkaline pH isn’t enough. You need to make sure that what you alkalize your water with will actually make it healthy, and that there are no dangerous toxins lurking in it that can be made even more toxic when the water is alkalized.
An important fact about chlorine in water
You must make sure that the water you alkalize has no chlorine in it. Chlorine is harmful to health. It is very harmful to your heart if it ’s present in your alkaline water. An ordinary filter pitcher filter will not do, its tiny filter only removes the taste and odor of chlorine, so there can still be chlorine present in water that has been filtered using an ordinary pitcher.
For your health: Life Ionizers uses our patent-pending Vitamin C Ceramic Block filtration media in all our water ionizers. Vitamin C filtration is laboratory grade anti-chlorine filtration, it is used when chlorine elimination is critical in laboratories and hospitals.
Himalayan sea salt
Some people alkalize their water with Himalayan sea salt, because it is loaded with healthy trace minerals. To alkalize your water with Himalayan sea salt, simply add a half teaspoon of Himalayan sea salt to an 8-ounce glass of water and drink it. There are a few downsides to using Himalayan sea salt, however:
- The water tastes like salt water
- It can cause high blood pressure
- No antioxidant benefit
Himalayan sea salt may be more nutritious than regular salt, but it contains the same amount of sodium that you’d get in regular salt. Most people already get more than the amount of sodium they need from their diet. Excessive salt consumption leads to high blood pressure and heart trouble. If you are going to alkalize your water with Himalayan sea salt, you need to reduce the amount of salt in your diet, and monitor your blood pressure. If you notice your blood pressure is getting higher after drinking water mixed with Himalayan sea salt, then you’re taking in too much sodium for good health.
Just like Himalayan sea salt, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) contains a lot of sodium. So you should also consider your salt intake, and probably reduce it if you are going to use this method to alkalize your water. To alkalize your water with baking soda, add about a half teaspoon of baking soda to 8 ounces of water and drink. Just like water alkalized with Himalayan sea salt, water alkalized with baking soda tastes terrible and it has no antioxidant benefit
Lemon juice and other citrus fruits
You can’t actually alkalize water with lemons juice or citrus fruits because they are acidic. But when you drink water mixed with lemon juice or other citrus fruits, it actually alkalizes your body! The reason citrus juices alkalize you is that once your body metabolizes the citrus juice, there are alkaline minerals left over that are not absorbed by your body. Those minerals are discharged in your urine, so they raise the pH.
The juice from citrus fruits is full of nutritional goodness, and there is no dangerous sodium to watch out for like there is in baking soda and sea salt. But do keep in mind that you can’t add sugar to sweeten these juices. Sugar undoes all the good things that citrus juices do for your health.
To make a healthy citrus juice beverage that alkalizes your body, cut about a quarter of lemon or other citrus fruit, and squeeze the juice into about 8 ounces of water.
Alkaline water filter pitchers
An alkaline water filter pitcher like the Pitcher of Life is a convenient and economical way to alkalize water. The Pitcher of Life uses space-age filtration technology to that filters contaminants. It then alkalizes your water to a pH of between 8.0 and 9.5.
Alkalizing pitchers do have some limits. It takes a long time, usually about 20 minutes to alkalize about 2 liters of water. Plus you only get a limited antioxidant benefit. But alkalizing pitchers are a great way to try alkaline water to see if it is for you.
Pitcher of Life Facts:
- Makes 2 liters of water at a time
- pH of between 8.0 and 9.5
- Limited antioxidant benefit
Alkaline water ionizers
Water ionizers are different. All the other methods discussed here alkalize water by adding something to it. Water ionizers alkalize water by changing the composition of the existing mineral salts in tap water – they add nothing to it. Instead, alkaline water machines separate the alkaline minerals in water; mostly calcium and magnesium, from the bicarbonate in water. Each is discharged from a separate port on the machine.
This mineral salt separation process has a huge advantage over all the other methods of alkalizing water: While the machine is alkalizing water, it also charges your water with antioxidant potential!
Other benefits of alkalizing your water with a water ionizer are that you get to pick the pH of the water you want. So you set it to make alkaline water with a pH of about 9 – 9.5 for daily drinking, which is perfect for maintaining health. If you’re working on improving your pH balance, want to improve athletic performance, or cooking, you use alkaline water with a pH of 10 or higher.
High-quality Life Ionizers also give you the best water purification thanks to customized filtration. Life Ionizers actually researches your local water quality and makes sure you have the right filters to ensure the purity of your water.
Best of all, Life Ionizer guarantees that you will get the highest age-fighting antioxidant potential in every glass of pH-balanced water you drink! This means that you get more benefit to your health from a Life Ionizer than you do from any other kind of alkaline water alkalizer!
