Nearly all alkaline water ionizers make four levels of alkaline water. Each of these levels has a use for maintaining a healthy body pH balance. The key to maintaining a healthy body pH balance is knowing what level of water to drink, and when to drink it.
Monitor your urine pH balance
You monitor your urine using pH test strips. The pH of your urine will vary depending on the time of day, and what time you ate last.
Check your urine pH when you first get up, an hour before and after each meal, and before you go to bed. Keep track of the daily average pH of the readings you get of your urine. Talk to your doctor before starting to drink alkaline water!
Level one to start
Start drinking alkaline water at level one because some new alkaline water drinkers have reported mild flu-like symptoms for up to a week.
Tip: Drink level one alkaline water for at least two weeks before going to a higher pH level alkaline water. Talk to your doctor if you experience any flu-like symptoms
Daily pH balance goals
An average urine pH of 6.5 – 7.5 pH is associated with reduced risk for metabolic syndrome, so you may want to make that your goal. Most water ionizers will produce alkaline water with a pH of about 9.5 at setting 2 or 3. Alkaline water health experts recommend drinking alkaline water with a pH of no higher than 9.5 for daily use. If you are considering drinking alkaline water with a pH higher than 9.5 for health issues, talk to your doctor.
Tip: When increasing the pH of the water you drink, step up one level at a time. Monitor your urine and saliva pH and talk to your doctor about any changes you see.
Acidic Body Conditions
You need to follow the advice of a health professional when deciding which level to drink. As a general rule of thumb, level 3 or 4 alkaline water is used for these conditions:
- Upset Stomach – Alkaline water is prescribed by doctors in Japan for mild digestive upset
- Exercise – Some athletes alkalize prior to working out
- Persistently low urine pH – Follow a health professional’s advice
Tip: Alkaline water with a pH higher than 9.5 is for short-term use unless directed by a health professional.
Alkaline Water Hydration – Timing is Everything
Many health experts recommend drinking water during these times:
- First thing in the morning
- Half hour before meals
- One hour after meals
- Before, during, and after workouts
- Hour before bed
Drink two glasses of water when you first get up, this helps your intestines clear food waste from the night before. An hour before meals, drink alkaline water to provide hydration. An hour after meals, drink alkaline water to help clean out the stomach.
Before workouts, you may want to drink level 3 or 4 alkaline water to alkalize your body. During workouts, alkaline water mixed with an electrolyte beverage like Gatorade may help you perform your best. For an hour after workouts, level 3 or 4 alkaline water is recommended for muscle recovery.
Drink your last glass of water an hour before bed. This glass of water may actually save your life! Studies have shown that drinking a glass of water an hour before bed may help prevent a heart attack or stroke.

Why a water ionizer is best for maintaining body pH balance
A water ionizer allows you to easily control the pH of your water. You get exactly the pH you want, and the machine’s filters purify your water so it is clean and healthy. You can also use the alkaline water from a water ionizer to cook with, and it will make your food more alkaline.
Additives like pH drops that make alkaline water have some shortcomings. They don’t allow you to control pH, nor do they provide filtration to purify your water. Some pH additives, such as baking soda also make your water taste terrible. Alkaline water from a water ionizer tastes slightly sweeter and more refreshing than regular water.
