What is the body’s pH balance?
Blood pH: Your body has more than one pH balance. Every fluid in your body has an ideal pH range for health. The healthy pH range for your blood is just one-tenth of a pH, from 7.35 to 7.45. That may not sound like much, but it is. The pH scale is logarithmic, a one-tenth of a pH increase equals a 100% increase in alkalinity! Research shows that drinking alkaline water will quickly raise your blood pH by about .04 – .07 of a pH. That’s enough to restore your blood pH to healthy levels.
Urine pH: Your urine pH has a much wider range than your blood pH, for good health, your average urine pH should be 6 or greater. Urine can drop as low as a pH of 4.5 when your body is discharging acidity, but it should only be that low temporarily. If your urine pH is regularly below a pH of 5.7, you are likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome. The symptoms of metabolic syndrome are:

- High blood pressure
- Bone loss

Saliva pH: The pH of your saliva can vary depending on the part of your mouth that it is collected from. But in general, the healthy pH range for saliva runs from 7.0 to 7.5. Since saliva pH is affected by the food you eat, you have to wait at least two hours after eating to get a valid test result. If your saliva pH is consistently below 7, it may indicate health problems or an overly acidic diet that will lead to health problems.
How alkaline water affects blood, urine, and saliva pH
Drinking alkaline water will raise the pH of your bodily fluids. Blood pH is affected within minutes because alkaline water is absorbed quickly by the body. It takes about a half hour or more for it to affect your urine pH, and saliva pH would be raised almost immediately, but the effect is short-lived.
Blood pH: Drinking alkaline water will raise blood pH by about 40 – 70% within the healthy pH range for blood, which is a tenth of a pH, between 7.35 to 7.45 if your body is in a state of metabolic acidosis. Alkaline water will not raise your blood pH beyond the safe range. The actual increase in blood pH, a pH of 0.04 to 0.07 may not seem like much, but remember that the safe range is only a tenth of a pH wide. So an increase of 0.04 to 0.07 is actually a 40 – 70% increase in blood pH.
Urine pH: Within about a half hour, drinking alkaline water may raise your urine pH by 0.5 to 1. Because the pH scale is logarithmic, an increase of 0.5 to 1 is a 5 times to 10 times increase in alkalinity! Typically, urine pH remains elevated for about an hour. Because of this, a great way to maintain a high average urine pH is to drink one glass of alkaline water per hour.
Saliva pH: Will increase immediately after drinking a glass of alkaline water, but that increase is only due to the alkaline water mixing with your saliva, so it is short-lived. A more accurate test is to wait about a half hour after drinking alkaline water to test your saliva. Then you will see the effect alkaline water had on the bodily fluids that make your saliva. This effect will vary widely, so it’s impossible to give a range for the amount of increase. In general, saliva is the least reliable indicator of overall body pH balance.
How to use a water ionizer to raise your pH balance
Drink alkaline water on an empty stomach, between meals. Drinking it during a meal could interfere with your stomach acid’s pH. Wait about a half hour after drinking alkaline water before you eat, and wait an hour after finishing your meal. Use the highest level of alkaline water (level 4) that your machine makes for cooking with, and for detoxifying produce. You want to soak your produce in level 4 alkaline water because alkaline water neutralizes acidic pesticide and herbicide residues. You can also make coffee and tea less acidic by preparing them with alkaline water. It will boost the antioxidant benefit of both coffee and tea.
