Nuns Avoid Bottled Water
In the fall of 2006, the National Coalition of American Nuns adopted a resolution that asked members to avoid drinking bottled water unless absolutely necessary. Why? Because they believe that privatization of something so essential to life, as water is, by companies like Pepsi-Cola, Coke and Nestle, is immoral. "The use of bottled water in the U.S. is more a lifestyle issue than a necessity," Coyle said. "In this country, we should do more to push [avoidance of] bottled water unless we need it." It is every person's right to have access to clean, non-toxic water. Yet the corporate water industry continues to bloat, as U.S. sales of bottled water leapt 170 percent between 1997 and 2006—$4 billion to $10.8 billion. Globally, bottled water is a $60 billion-a-year business. Let's face it—we're gluttons for packaged water, and the trend continues to float higher and higher. In the United States, consumption of bottled water in 1987 was 5.7 gallons per person; by 1997 it was 12.1 gallons and in 2006 it was 27.6 gallons per person. The sales of bottled water in the United States has surpassed the sales of beer and milk and by 2011 they are expected to surpass soda!
