Alarming New Study Points to Widespread Tap Water Contamination
A study released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) provided the first ever survey of the suspected carcinogen hexavalent chromium in the nation’s tap water. Also known as chromium-6, the public was first made aware of the cancer danger posed by the chemical in the movie Erin Brokovich. Upon hearing of the EWG study, Brokovich herself stated: “This chemical has been so widely used by so many industries across the U.S. that this doesn’t surprise me”
EPA Warns that the Agency may not be able to Protect Public
The head of the EPA, Lisa P. Jackson, announced new measures to detect the presence of hexavalent chromium in drinking water within hours of the announcement of the EWG study, but according to Jackson, detection may not translate into action or protection.
The Huffington Post published an article written by Jackson where she acknowledges rising public concern about the danger of hexavalent chromium, stating that the outcry has been nationwide. However, Jackson warns of partisan obstruction to the EPA’s efforts saying: “others have called EPA’s science into question and pledged to curtail EPA’s ability to tackle challenges just like this one.”
The use of hexavalent chromium has been severely restricted or banned for use in many instances, but some industries such as plastics, chrome plating, and dye manufacturing still use it. These industries oppose EPA efforts to regulate hexavalent chromium. Some municipal water utilities worry that regulation of the toxin may prove cost prohibitive, and oppose it for that reason.
Point of Entry Water Filtration an Effective Defense against Hexavalent Chromium
In a separate study, jointly conducted by the EPA and the Department of Homeland Defense, Point-of-Entry (POE) home filtration systems like LIFE Ionizers Dolphin Whole Home Filtration System were cited as the public’s best defense against waterborne threats such as hexavalent Chromium. The study relied on performance and reliability standards issued by the NSF/ANSI to identify filtration systems that were of high enough quality to counter water-borne threats.
LIFE Ionizers carries a full range of NSF/ANSI certified water treatment systems that can offer protection from a wide range of contaminants found in drinking water such as chlorine, and heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium. The Dolphin system is lab certified effective for use as a home water filtration system against a wide range of contaminants.
At-the-Tap Treatment Leaves Consumers Vulnerable
Many consumers buy kitchen sink filters or filtered water pitchers in an effort to protect themselves from the dangers of chemicals found in their tap water. Unfortunately, these systems do not prevent poisonous gasses called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s) from evaporating from tap water because the water is filtered inside the home. Additionally, at-the-tap treatment is often only used at the kitchen sink, leaving people in a home vulnerable to toxic tap water that flows unfiltered from other sinks, toilets, and showers in the home.
Dolphin System Independently Tested, Proven Effective
The Dolphin Whole Home Filtration system protects consumers from the wide range of over 1000 dangerous chemicals found in virtually all US tap water. The Dolphin system is designed to be effective against organic compounds like Chlorine, heavy metals like hexavalent chromium, and harmful added chemicals like fluoride. Independent laboratory testing has proven the Dolphin system to be highly effective for treating tap water with a wide range and high concentrations of water-borne contaminants.
