The Truth About Digestion & the Benefits of Alkaline Water

If you always thought the purpose of your stomach is digestion, think again!  Though most people, including MD’s, think that the stomach is a big vat filled with hydrochloric acid to digest food, this is a huge misunderstanding.  Your stomach isn’t an organ of digestion at all! Its main function is in the preparation of what you eat for absorption, rather than in the absorption itself.  That preparation consists of “alkalizing” the food you eat in preparation of sending it to the small intestines.  The stomach secretes alkaline buffers like sodium carbonate to neutralize acids in the food you eat.

Also, if you thought hydrochloric acid in the stomach is responsible for digestion, that is another misconception. The chemical process that makes sodium bicarbonate has a waste-product called hydrochloric acid! The hydrochloric acid itself doesn’t digest anything!  However, in the event that you inadvertently eat dense proteins like meat, for example, the hydrochloric acid in your stomach comes to the rescue. But even now it doesn’t “digest” or breaking down proteins itself, it is part of a chemical process that creates enzymes that break down proteins. Of course, because it happens in the presence of such a strong acid, your body now has a serious acidic mess to alkalize before it can safely enter the small intestines – because ALL food you eat must be alkalized before it can be utilized.

Remember, your body ultimately runs on electrons/energy – not vitamins, amino acids or minerals. What these nutrients really do is contribute electrons to where they’re needed! But for this to happen everything you eat must be in the only form that has electrons/energy to contribute – which is alkaline.  So the stomach is really an organ of contribution, as Dr. Robert O. Young would say, not digestion!

Though your body is designed to be alkaline, everything that we humans do creates acids!  Dr. Young says humans are “alkaline by design and acidic by function.” When you understand this all the health benefits of alkaline water start to make a lot more sense! It is very important that you base your decision to enjoy a healthier, more alkaline lifestyle on this understanding rather than blind faith or it won’t be sustainable. Armed with understanding you will be self-empowered in your commitment to a healthier, more vibrant alkaline-based lifestyle!
