How the Kangen Water Machine Works

The Kangen Water machine®  is a water ionizer. It works exactly the same way that any other water ionizer works: Water passes over charged plates that are separated by an ion-permeable membrane. The electrostatic charge on the machine’s plates causes the minerals in tap water – calcium and magnesium – to be separated from the acidic carbonate that they are mixed within the water. Once free of the acidic carbonate, the minerals combine with an antioxidant hydroxyl ion taken from a water molecule which forms mineral hydrates. It is the mineral hydrates in Kangen Water® that give it its alkalinity and antioxidant potential.

But Doesn’t the Kangen Water machine® microcluster water?

No. Microclustering is pseudoscience – a falsehood dressed up to look like science. Well known skeptics like Brian Dunning have exhaustively debunked Enagic® Kangen’s® microclustering claims, yet Enagic’s® army of multi-level marketers who sell the Kangen Water machine continues to make claims based on microclustering. Water ionizer don’t microcluster water, because there is no such thing. Enagic® uses the term microclustering as a marketing term to sell Kangen Water, but there’s no medical science to back it up.

Why some people believe in microclustering: Like most pseudoscience, microclustering is based on real science, but it ignores some inconvenient facts. Microclustering is based on the theory of hydrogen bonding: The hydrogen atoms in a water molecule have a weak attraction to each other, and may occasionally bond together for a few picoseconds – trillionths of a second – and then break apart. It’s even possible that water molecules could bond together in a hexagonal shape for a few picoseconds, and then break apart.

What all that means is: There are no microclusters of water molecules in Kangen Water®, or any other kind of water. Water molecules may bond to each other – and then break apart in all kinds of water. But all this is theoretical because these bonds have never been observed. Even if they do happen, these bonds don’t last long enough to affect how absorbable the water is, or have any effect on your health whatsoever.

Is Kangen Water® better alkaline water?

No, Kangen Water® is a trademark (hence the ® after it) owned by Enagic® Corporation. Kangen Water® is the name Enagic® uses to advertise the alkaline water that the Kangen Water machine® makes. The strength and potency of alkaline water is measured in three ways:

• Alkalinity – The ability of alkaline water to neutralize acid
• ORP – Oxidation Reduction Potential – The antioxidant potential of alkaline water
• pH – Potential Hydrogen – Amount of hydrogen in the water available for chemical reactions

FACT: In water ionizer comparisons, Kangen Water® machines are considered mid-range water ionizers

Alkalinity: According to Enagic® Kangen Water® advertising claims, it takes 23 eight-ounce glasses of Kangen Water® to neutralize the acid in a can of soda. I did the same test using a Life Ionizer MXL-7 – a seven plate ionizer, just like the Kangen Water machine® – and I was able to neutralize the acid in a can of soda with just 18 eight-ounce glasses of alkaline water.  That’s a full 40 ounces less than the 23 glasses it takes a Kangen machine®!

ORP: The antioxidant potential of alkaline water is measured in millivolts. Kangen Water® is advertised as having an antioxidant ORP of just over -600 millivolts (mV). A Life Ionizer M7 makes alkaline water with an antioxidant potential of over -700 mV, Life’s most powerful machine, the Life M-13 can make alkaline water with an antioxidant potential of over -900 millivolts, 50% more antioxidant potential than Kangen Water®.

pH: Kangen water® is advertised as having a pH of up to 10, which is actually mid-range for modern water ionizer. A Life M7 can reach a pH of 11, which is 10 times more alkaline than a pH of 10, because the pH scale is logarithmic – each increase of 1 pH is a 10 times increase in alkalinity. Keep in mind that high alkalinity is what you want if you’re neutralizing acidity!

Why is the Kangen Water Machine® so expensive?

As you can see, the Kangen Water machine® isn’t as powerful as other ionizers, the other ionizers mentioned in this article cost less than the Kangen Water machine® – a lot less. The seven plate Kangen Water machine costs $3,980, the seven plate Life Ionizers MXL7 is just $1,997.  That’s a savings of $1,983!
