Kangen Healing Water: Is it for real?

Do a search for kangen healing water and you’ll see some pretty amazing results: You’ll see websites that claim it has ‘miracle’

Kangen salespeople aren’t supposed to claim Kangen water heals anything

healing power, that it has ‘tremendous’ healing power, and that it has ‘amazing’ health benefits. There’s only one problem with these claims:

Enagic corporation, the company that makes the machine that makes Kangen water,  doesn’t claim that Kangen water cures any diseases. Instead, claims that Kangen water cures diseases are made by independent sales representatives that sell the machine.

Enagic also says that the people that sell the Kangen machine (the marketers that make all those websites claiming miraculous healing) aren’t allowed by Enagic to claim that Kangen water heals anything! But Enagic rarely enforces the rule, so their sales representatives make all kinds of claims about Kangen water.

Confused yet? Enagic says that they don’t claim their water has healing properties, but Enagic’s salespeople claim that it has miraculous healing qualities.

Enagic vs. Enagic’s sales representatives: Who is right?

So who is right? Enagic or Enagic’s sales representatives? To answer that question, you can search for medical studies on Kangen water using Google Scholar: A search engine designed to return available scientific research for any subject you care to learn about.  If you search for “Kangen healing water”, you get no results. This means that there are zero scientific studies on Kangen water! All those websites that claim Kangen water has amazing healing power? Those claims are based on nothing. So according to Google Scholar, Enagic is right: Kangen water has no healing ability.

Even more confused? So there’s no medical research on Kangen water. Then why do some people claim that it has miraculous healing power?

The plain truth about Kangen water

“Kangen” isn’t a kind of water, Kangen is a type of Japanese music. It is both elegant and beautiful. If you like elegant, beautiful music, click here listen to Gagaku; music played in the Kangen style. While you enjoy the music, we’ll take a look at how Kangen, a style of music, became associated with water.

According to the Japanese-English dictionary, the word Kangen means “return to origin.” along with other meanings. The way it became associated with water is that Enagic corporation decided to market the alkaline water made by their machine as “Kangen” water. Enagic took one of the meanings of the word Kangen; return to origin, and used it to market their water machine. So that’s all Kangen water really is: A brand name for alkaline water.

Now for a twist: Now that you know that “Kangen” water is just a brand name for alkaline water, you can now ask: Does alkaline water have any healing properties? If you go back to Google Scholar and use the scientific name for alkaline water, which is: “Electrolyzed Reduced Water”, you’ll find over 40 studies on the health effects of electrolyzed reduced water!

So, Kangen water is electrolyzed reduced water. Does it have any healing properties?

Research on electrolyzed reduced water suggests that it can help with some health conditions and that it may be able to improve your overall health, especially if you are over 50 years of age. Research also shows that electrolyzed reduced water enhances athletic performance for people of all ages. So the bottom line is: Electrolyzed reduced water may help you maintain or improve your health. A better way of thinking about it, rather than as ‘healing’ water is to think of it as water that supports good health.

Finally! So Kangen water is alkaline water or electrolyzed reduced water to scientists. But is it the best kind of water for your health?

What makes alkaline water good for your health

Alkaline water that is made by a water ionizer supplies four things that are good for your health:

  • Essential minerals like calcium and magnesium
  • Acid-fighting alkalinity
  • Superior hydration
  • Age-fighting antioxidant potential

Essential minerals: Alkaline water supplies about 10 – 20% of your daily needs for calcium and magnesium if you drink about 2 – 3 liters of it per day. According to the World Health Organization, your body absorbs minerals from water about 30 times faster and easier than it does from food. Because water is such a great source of mineral nutrition, the World Health Organization recommends that you get between 10 – 20% of your daily needs for calcium and magnesium from the water you drink. Alkaline water is an excellent source of those minerals

Acid-fighting alkalinity:  When you are young and healthy, your body can handle acidity all on its own, that’s why young people can seemingly eat anything they want. But as we age, our body’s ability to handle acidity declines. That’s why older folks often have to watch what they eat! What you lose as you age is your body’s alkaline buffer: Your body’s ability to buffer acids declines. So when you eat something that’s too acidic, your body enters a temporary condition of over acidity called metabolic acidosis. So to handle that acidity, your body could use a little help. That’s exactly what alkaline water does: It supplies alkalinity that your body can use to fight over acidic conditions like GERD.

Age-fighting antioxidant potential: Antioxidants in the body counteract harmful radicals, which destroy DNA and tissues by stealing electrons from them. Antioxidants have excess electrons, and when they come in contact with radicals, they release their electrons to the radicals, which reduces their ability to steal those electrons. That reducing ability of antioxidant alkaline water is the reason scientists call alkaline water electrolyzed reduced water. Alkaline water’s ability to reduce radicals ability to oxidize (by stealing electrons) gives it the potential to protect DNA and tissues from those harmful radicals. Research suggests that this reducing ability may extend life and help protect against degenerative diseases like dementia and alzheimers.

But is Kangen water the best kind of alkaline water?

No. Now that you understand why alkaline water is good for you, it’s possible to evaluate Kangen water in terms of its alkalinity and antioxidant potential: Kangen water is less potent alkaline water. It has less acid-fighting alkalinity, and less age-fighting antioxidant potential than alkaline water made by more powerful water ionizers. For example, the Kangen machine has only 230 watts of power. The Life Ionizer MXL-13 can have up to 800 watts of power if you need it. Because of that, the MXL-13 is able to make a more potent alkaline water, with more acid-fighting alkalinity, and more age-fighting antioxidant potential than the Kangen machine. The best news of all? The Life M-13 costs $483 less than the Kangen machine!
