The EPA allows more fluoride in water than is considered safe by health experts

Recent research on causes of heart disease has revealed a link between fluoride and coronary artery disease. The study, referred to as: Association of vascular fluoride uptake with vascular calcification and coronary artery disease. Researchers examined the arteries of 61 people for signs of calcification – artery hardening due to calcium, and fluoride absorption.

Connection between fluoride and heart disease described as “significant”

Fluoride was detected in the vascular walls (veins) of 96% of study participants, and calcification was observed in the vascular walls of 88% of participants. Study participants arteries also showed significant calcification and fluoride absorption.

Doctors who reviewed study participants’ medical histories noted that there was a very strong link between the presence of fluoride in artery walls and the history of heart disease. Researchers concluded that”An increased fluoride uptake in coronary arteries may be associated with an increased cardiovascular risk.”

Too much fluoride in public water supplies

Earlier this year, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) jointly announced that they would be recommending that fluoride levels in drinking water be lowered because of a slow rise in fluorosis – fluoride poisoning that causes brittle bones, brain damage, and discolored teeth, among other health problems.

The HHS proposed lowering maximum allowable levels of fluoride in water to 0.7 mg/l. The EPA, which sets actually sets the standard, currently allows up to 4 mg/l of fluoride in water. This means that the EPA allows 5.71 times more fluoride in water supplies than the HHS actually deems safe! The EPA has said it is considering lowering the allowable level of fluoride in water, but has not officially acted yet.

Why the difference?

The EPA and the HHS have two separate goals when it comes to fluoride:

• HHS – (recommendation) Reduce tooth decay while minimizing the rate of fluorosis
• EPA – (Sets the standard) Maximum concentration of fluoride it considers safe

What this means: The EPA now believes its current standard (4 mg/l) is too high, but the EPA is not ready to set a new standard yet. Until the EPA sets a new standard, it is possible that the level of fluoride in your water could pose risks to your health.

If you live near a fracking well, chances are good that your water is fracked

All three forms of chloramines are in your water - are you protected?

Chloramine has been replacing chlorine in some municipal water treatment systems due to concerns about chlorine’s health effects. The problem is, chloramine seems to have harmful health effects that are similar to chlorine.

What are chloramines?

Water utilities use a form of chloramine that is composed of one part chlorine, to one part ammonia. That form of chloramine is referred to as monochloramine. The problem is, monochloramine changes form readily into other, more harmful forms of chloramine

There are three different forms of chloramine: monochloramine (NH2Cl), dichloramine (NHCl2) and trichloramine (NCl3). They convert easily into each other; thus, they are more appropriately called chloramines.

The three types of chloramine constantly shift from one form to another. The type that will be present at any given time is dependent on pH, temperature, turbulence, and the chlorine to ammonia ratio. Time is also a factor because after a day or so, the monochloramine put in your water by your local water treatment plant will slowly degrade to form dichloramine and some trichloramine. Chloramines are respiratory irritants; trichloramine is the most toxic of the three:

Order of toxicity:

• monochloramine = less toxic
• dichloramine
• trichloramine = most toxic

Water utilities in denial

In contrast to what water utilities claim, it is impossible to have only monochloramine. It is not unusual in water systems for harmful di and trichloramines to occur. Disinfection byproducts are chemicals formed when a disinfectant combines with organic matter or other chemicals present in water. Trihalomethanes – suspected carcinogens – are also formed with chloramine disinfection.

Chloramine facts

• Chloramine does not dissipate easily compared to chlorine.
• Chloramine stays in the water distribution system longer than chlorine.
• Chloramine is difficult to remove.
• Chloramine cannot be removed by boiling, distilling, or by standing uncovered.
• Some disinfection byproducts of chloramine are even more toxic than those of chlorine.
• Chloramine vapors and its disinfection byproducts can accumulate in indoor air and concentrate in an enclosed area such as a shower stall.

How to protect yourself against chloramines

Consumption of alkaline water improved hydration levels by 17%

A hydration study performed on cyclists by Daniel P Heil shows that Alkaline Ionized Mineral water hydrates you 17% better than plain bottled water. The study looked at 10 male cyclists that were an average of 40 years old. Each of the men in the study participated in two trials each a week a part. One trial was conducted with mineral alkaline water with a 10 pH. The other trial used bottled water that had a pH of 7.

How dehydration during exercise is measured

Dehydration during exercise is measured by tracking your body weight before, during and after exercise. For example, if you lose 2.5% of your body weight during exercise, you are very dehydrated!  The author of this article weighs 145 Lbs.  2.5% of the author’s body weight is 3.625 pounds.

Keep in mind that a gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, so a loss of less than half a pound (about two quarts of water) means that the author of this article would be dehydrated.

How hydration after exercise is measured

The study had the cyclists exercise until 2.5% of their body weight was lost due to dehydration. When each man had lost 2.5% of his body weight, he then drank either alkaline water or the neutral pH water.

Their hydration level was then determined by comparing the amount of water they drank, to the amount of water they peed out over the next three hours. The more water that each cyclist retained, the better hydrated they were considered to be. The formula used in the study to measure hydration is:

Your body hydration % = [1 – (Total amount of urine/ total amount of water drank) *100].

If you don’t want to do the math, just remember: When you are dehydrated, the less water that you lose to urine, the better!

Why alkaline water hydrates you better than plain water

Cyclists in the study retained 79.2% of the alkaline water they drank, versus. 62.5% of the plain water. In plain terms, the cyclists were about 17% better hydrated by drinking the alkaline water than they were with plain water.

There are competing theories that explain why alkaline water hydrates you better. One is that alkaline water is microclustered. This means that the clusters of water molecules in alkaline water are smaller than the molecule cluster size in plain water. Another theory is that the alkaline pH level of alkaline water is responsible for hydrating you better. Your intestines have a pH of about 8.3, so water with an alkaline pH may be easier for your intestines to absorb.
