Well water poisoned with arsenic can cause lesions on the skin

Water quality in Landry Parish, Louisiana has been getting worse for years. Residents are being poisoned by rising levels of arsenic in their well water, but Republican legislative efforts to kill clean water programs in Congress are likely to eliminate the funds needed to clean it up. While no specific source for the arsenic contamination has been found, natural gas drilling in the area is a likely culprit. High levels of arsenic in groundwater all around the nation have been attributed to a method of natural gas extraction known as fracking which was reported on in an earlier entry in this blog.

Help is NOT on the way

Residents in the town of Melville depend on privately owned wells for their water, and have become increasingly alarmed by rising levels of arsenic found in their water. There is at least one case where arsenic levels were five times higher than EPA limits. Melville has been trying for years to tap into the municipal water system in nearby Krotz Springs for years, but have been stymied by a lack of funding to pay for the needed piping. Louisiana’s District 5 (which included Melville) has applied for a $980,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program, but the program is facing the GOP budget axe.

Residents Living on Bottled Water

Laura Satterly became concerned because she constantly felt sick: “I was tired all the time”. Her hair was tested for signs of poisoning and it showed high levels of arsenic. Her husband had their well water tested and it showed arsenic levels of 54.2 parts per billion — over five times the EPA limit. Satterly is worried about what effect the arsenic will have on her children, aged 9 and 11.

Cynthia Lacassin also worried about her health and the health of her children when testing showed arsenic levels of 38 parts per billion in her well water. Her family mostly drank bottled water, but she says she made ice and cooked with tap water until she learned of the arsenic contamination. Now, just as many of her neighbors, she uses bottled water for drinking and cooking. Out of concern, she moved into her father’s home temporarily, but went home after her doctor gave her some dubious advice and assured her that she was safe unless she ingested the arsenic laced water.

US postal worker at 95

REDLANDS, Calif. — It wasn’t snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night that stopped Chester Arthur Reed from his appointed round. The mail handler just felt it was time to call it quits at age 95.

The fork lift operator retired Wednesday as the nation’s oldest postal worker, ending a career without taking a single sick day. It’s a feat he attributes to a healthy diet of watermelon, alkaline water and an onion sandwich with mayo every day.

“If everyone in the nation ate watermelons, they’d get rid of all the doctors,” Reed said.

Despite being partially deaf and walking with a stoop, Reed has worked for more years than many of his co-workers have been alive and has accrued 3,856 hours — nearly two years — of sick leave for not missing a shift in 37 years.

Reed has been a U.S. Postal Service mail handler and forklift operator since he was hired in 1973, making $4 an hour. He hit the $25-an-hour ceiling about 10 years ago.

Reed said he likes his job because “one, it’s a steady income and, two, they don’t hassle you.” But he also knows when to leave, reasoning: “The Bible says there’s a time for everything. Well, it’s time to retire, and that’s it.”

Reed worked the 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift and logged in more than 12 hours some days, his 55-year-old manager Mary Brunkhorst said. “We’d have to force him to go home, and he’d say there’s still work to do. It takes a special person to work to age 95. Our generation would not do that.”

About 100 people attended a retirement ceremony Wednesday for Reed where he was presented with a plaque bearing about 40 stamps that depict locations he visited or activities he enjoyed. Some in the audience wiped away tears.

Reed was hired to the postal service after serving in the Air Force, which he joined at age 33. Among the places where he served were Wiesbaden in Germany, Okinawa in Japan, and three Texas bases before ending up in March Field in Riverside where he currently lives.

Despite his travel during military service, Reed still has wanderlust. He and his 59-year-old son Richard visit a continent each year, recently marking their fifth. He is planning another trip that will include Moscow, Helsinki and Dublin, and a second parasailing adventure in Rio de Janeiro.

He last parasailed two years ago, at age 93.

Reed was born in 1914 and grew up in St. Clairsville, Ohio, as the son of an auto mechanic and a housewife. After high school, he worked on Ford Model Ts in his dad’s auto shop. In 1944, Reed met his wife Iva Katherine, a dance instructor, on the dance floor and enlisted in the Air Force three years later.

He retired from active service as a sergeant in 1972. He said he heard the post office was hiring, so he went in for an interview and was hired on the spot.

His military service, which included physical conditioning with pilots, is evident in the rigid discipline surrounding his health. It’s his favorite topic of conversation, said Reed’s co-worker Verna Ortiz, 50.

He believes in drinking alkaline water, to minimize acids that can damage digestive system, and eating sandwiches made “with a lot of mayonnaise and get a big slice of onion” because the vegetable is closely related to garlic, one of the healthiest foods you can eat, he said.

“He taught me to stay away from the two S’s: salt and sugar,” Ortiz said, adding she lost 10 pounds in six months by taking his advice.

Reed also likes to point out that his personal hero, the fitness guru Jack LaLanne whom Reed calls “a fine physical specimen,” is only one month his senior.

Reed is one of seven siblings, but has outlived all but the youngest — a 65-year-old who lives near San Diego. Reed’s other son died of cancer at age 58 a few years ago, and Reed’s wife died soon after.

Regardless of his longevity, Reed doesn’t think he’s leaving a legacy. “Put your hand in a bucket of water, put it in all the way to your wrist. Take it out and the hole that you leave will be how much you’ll be missed,” he said.

And while he may not be going to a job anymore, he’s still working hard.

“Hey, if Adam and Eve hadn’t messed up, they’d be living yet,” he said. “So I’m going to try to reach 100.”

The first measurement we’re looking for is the measure of pH. What you should be looking for in the results is an alkaline reading, which will be reflected as a higher pH value. This is the quality of drinking water that we want your ionizer to produce for optimum health. This higher pH value, or alkaline value is represented by a deep purple color by your litmus drops.

The next measurement we’re taking will be the ORP, which stands for oxidation-reduction potential. This is really just a scientific term that represents the levels of negative or positive charge that your water has, but most of all, this value represents the concentration of antioxidants in the water. The value we’re looking for in our drinking water is a deeply negative number, indicating that it has a lot of antioxidants that are stored and ready to be assimilated into your system. A deeper negative number means that your water has stronger antioxidants.

When water is passed through a chamber that has both negative and positive polarities, the water is “split” into hydroxyl ions (OH negative) and hydrogen (H positive), basic electrolysis.  The build up of negatively charged hydroxyl ions is what creates the anti-oxidant properties of the water and the negative ORP.  In addition, during the ionization process the water, once negatively charged, returns to its natural state in reference to molecular cluster size. What this means is that commercial water, tap water, industrial processed water, all have cluster sizes of 12-15 molecules, whereas ionized water has cluster sizes much smaller and in the range of 6. The water has become microclustered and is said to be restructured.  Cluster size is important when considering absorption (the smaller the cluster, the more increased absorption).  Increased absorption leads to better hydration and more efficient detoxification.

The processes that occur in a water ionizer machine are somewhat analogous to an air ionizer machine. Air ionizer machines in essence add negatively charged ions into the filtered air as it leaves the machine. The air is cleaner and often smells like a “waterfall”. Would spraying “waterfall” scented aerosol in a room be equivalent to what an air ionizer machine does to the air? Of course not! Nor does adding pH drops, essentially sea salt, to non-structured water and thinking it has become ionized, microclustered water.
