The water may look beautiful, but is it safe?

When hiking or setting up camp in back-country, water is a necessity. But if you don’t use adequate water filtration,  your camping trip can be ruined by nasty protozoa (giardia, cryptosporidium), bacteria (e.coli), or viruses (norovirus). That sparkling river or stream may make you terribly sick.

Experienced hikers know that water must be purified. While boiling water for a period of 1 to 3 minutes (depending on your elevation) is sure to kill all the bugs that can cause you real harm, this is not a practical solution for a hiker or camper who needs to drink a large quantity of water quickly. If you are unable to boil water, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a combination of water filtration and chemical disinfection.

Water Filtration Systems

First, let’s look at the water filtration systems. Most of these use a carbon or ceramic filter that water is pumped through. Be sure to find a filter that is an absolute or less than 0.3 microns. This will ensure that bacteria are filtered out. A long-lasting filter that is easy to clean in the field should also be a consideration. Water filtration does not protect against viruses, which is why the CDC recommends using them in combination with chemical disinfection.

Iodine and chlorine or chlorine dioxide are the most commonly used chemical disinfectants and are usually found in tablets that are dropped into the water. Some require a long wait time to ensure all of the microorganisms are killed. A drawback to these can be the chemical aftertaste in the water. But when used in combination with water filtration, you can be sure that you’ve covered all the bases in purification.

UV Light Filtration

A newer option on the market uses ultraviolet light to purify the water and claims to kill viruses as well as protozoa and bacteria. For camping, there are small systems that can be inserted in a container of water. A light is activated and a sensor tells the user when the water has been disinfected. In order for this system to work, the water must be clear of particulates, so make sure you buy a system it includes a water filtration device. This might be the quickest and most cost effective purification treatment. Just be sure to stock up on batteries for those long trips!

In all cases it is important to do your research on these devices and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use. The CDC also has a great online resource with recommendations and facts about protecting your health when exploring the back-country.

Studies indicate that alkaline water may provide these benefits

Can drinking alkaline ionized water improve your dental hygiene? Pure drinking water has a pH of 7.0, which means it’s neither acidic nor basic. Water you draw from the tap may be slightly acidic or basic with a pH that typically ranges from 6.5 to 9.0. Some experts believe there are disadvantages to drinking acidic water that has a pH below 7.0. Water that’s more acidic typically has higher levels of metal ions like iron and manganese and it may contain heavy metals. Acidic drinking water can erode plumbing pipes, releasing heavy metals into tap water. The pH of the water you drink could have an effect on your oral hygiene too.

 What is Ionized Alkaline Water?

Ionized water is water where ions have been produced by a process called electrolysis. Ionized water also has a more alkaline pH than most tap water you draw from the spigot. Some ionized alkaline water also contains  calcium, both of which may be beneficial for oral health.

A study carried out in Tokyo showed that ionized, alkaline water reduced the incidence of secondary dental caries that occur around teeth that have already been restored. In this study, it also reduced progression of dental caries.

Most of the benefits of ionized water are theoretical since little research has been carried out in this area, but there are no known risks to drinking ionized water. Some companies sell alkaline, ionized water in bottles you can purchase and drink. Another alternative is to invest in an alkaline water machine or ionizer you connect to your sink. This machine sends out an electrical current to produce ions and alkalinize tap water from your sink.

Fact: Research proves that alkaline water makes calcium more bioavailable (absorb-able) to your body ^[1], and drinking alkaline water has been also been proven to counteract the impact of dietary acid on bone loss even in people that get enough calcium in their diets. ^[2] Even skeptics are beginning to admit that alkaline water has a positive link to bone health!

A study performed on rats makes it easy to see how effective alkaline water is in supplying calcium. The image on the left shows two rats that were deprived of calcium in their food. Both rats were given calcium in their water, which researchers referred to as “calcium sufficient water”. The rat on the left was given calcium-sufficient tap water (pH 7) it shows visible signs of calcium deficiency such as hair loss, and researchers reported that it’s bones broke easily. The rat on the right was given calcium-sufficient ionized alkaline water (pH 8 – 9) and it showed no signs of calcium deficiency, even though it received no calcium in its diet!

Researchers divided 36 rats into 6 groups. Three of the groups were used as control groups, and were given adequate dietary calcium in their food. The other three groups were not given any calcium in their food. One control group received alkaline water, and one calcium deficient group received alkaline water.

During the study period, the concentration of calcium in the rats’ urine was measured. To find out how well the rats in the study actually absorbed the calcium that they received. Researchers found that rats given alkaline water (groups 3, 6) tended to have lower levels of calcium in their urine than the other groups, which indicates that the rats were retaining the calcium rather than losing it in their urine.

At the end of the study period, the rats were dissected in order to measure the calcium concentration in various body tissues and it was discovered that rats given alkaline water retained significantly higher calcium in their tissues and organs than all other groups. Based on the results of both the urine testing, and the tissue testing, the researchers concluded that alkaline water improves the bioavailability of calcium.

Alkaline Water Good for Bone Health even if you get enough Calcium in your Diet

Animal studies can tell researchers a lot, but they are not considered to be medical proof. A human study was conducted to find out if alkaline water had an impact on bone resorption – the process by which osteoclasts break down bone and release minerals. In this study, 30 female dieticians were divided into two groups. The first group drank calcium-rich alkaline water; the second group drank calcium-rich acid water.

To measure the rate of bone resorption, researchers measured two bone markers – levels of substances in the blood and urine – (referred to in the study as PTH and S-CTX) that are associated with bone loss. The two groups were tested at the beginning of the study to make sure that their levels of bone markers were the same. During the study, both groups consumed an identical diet (with sufficient calcium intake).

Both groups had their bone markers measured at 2 weeks, and again at 4 weeks.  The tests revealed that the bone markers were significantly lower in the group that drank alkaline water. Based on the test results, the researchers concluded: “In calcium sufficiency, the acid calcium-rich water had no effect on bone resorption, while the alkaline water rich in bicarbonate led to a significant decrease of PTH and of S-CTX.”

Conclusions

The results of these studies point to one obvious conclusion: Alkaline water makes calcium more bioavailable.  Both studies showed that alkaline water improved calcium absorption, whether there was sufficient calcium in the diet or not. There are even indications that alkaline water may be safer than bisphosphonate-based medications for maintaining bone health!

Alkaline Water Fan

Arpee Lazaro is a professional food critic who blogs for an Asian food review site called Pinoy Life at Large. Lazaro has become a huge fan of ionized alkaline water since he began noticing health benefits. An article in the Miami Herald posted on Tuesday pointed out that small changes in pH make a big difference. A drop in pH of just one tenth of a point (0.1 pH) increases acidity by 26%. The article warned that a drop of 0.1 pH had been detected in the earth’s oceans, and consequences such as the loss of coral reefs, are already occurring.

Pollution by dilution?

A recent announcement by government officials that they were going to recommend reducing the levels of fluoride added to water because of health concerns was no surprise to many health advocates that have been concerned about potential dangers of fluoride for years. Government officials cited concerns about florosis, a condition that affects tooth enamel development in children, causing their teeth to become spotted.

EPA cites report that suggests long term exposure can be harmful

Fluoride has been controversial ever since municipalities began adding it to drinking water in the 1940’s. A report cited by the EPA states that people who consume too much fluoride in their lifetime face the risk of crippling bone abnormalities. The EPA has not officially released recommendations for the new lower fluoride levels, and there is no word of how long it would take local water authorities to adjust fluoridation levels.

Pollution through dilution

The fluoride compound most frequently used to fluoridate water is hydrofluosilicic acid, which is a byproduct of the process used to manufacture fertilizer. Health advocates concerned about adding hydrofluosilicic acid to water point out that the compound frequently contains high amounts of lead, mercury, arsenic, and high concentrations of radionucleides.

Hydrofluosilicic acid should not be confused with calcium fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral compound that is found in nature. Calcium fluoride is non toxic; even a small amount of hydrofluosilicic acid in concentrated form can be lethal.

Bottled water is not safe

While many consumers turn to bottled water to avoid toxins like hydrofluosilicic acid, studies show that samples of bottled water regularly contain significant amounts of fluoride. Consumers should be aware that most bottled water is simply filtered tap water.

A study released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) provided the first ever survey of the suspected carcinogen hexavalent chromium in the nation’s tap water. EPA Warns that the Agency may not be able to Protect Public

The head of the EPA, Lisa P. Jackson, announced new measures to detect the presence of hexavalent chromium in drinking water within hours of the announcement of the EWG study, but according to Jackson, detection may not translate into action or protection.

The Huffington Post published an article written by Jackson where she acknowledges rising public concern about the danger of hexavalent chromium, stating that the outcry has been nationwide. However, Jackson warns of partisan obstruction to the EPA’s efforts saying: “others have called EPA’s science into question and pledged to curtail EPA’s ability to tackle challenges just like this one.”

The use of hexavalent chromium has been severely restricted or banned for use in many instances, but some industries such as plastics, chrome plating, and dye manufacturing still use it. These industries oppose EPA efforts to regulate hexavalent chromium. Some municipal water utilities worry that regulation of the toxin may prove cost prohibitive, and oppose it for that reason.

Carol Lin: Carol Lin: You’ve heard of alkaline batteries, but what about alkaline water? Could that be the secret behind this life changing slimming for one woman? When we come back, a doctor with a very different take on nutrition that seems to be working.

(0:20) Carol Lin: In our fountain of youth segment today, balancing your body chemistry to lose weight. A top research scientist say most of us take better care of our swimming pools then our body.  In his book, “The pH Miracle for Weight Loss” he has a different take on nutrition. Author and Dr. Robert Young is joining me now from New York. We have a lot of before and after pictures to show the folks out there, but Dr. Young first explain this whole pH balancing thing and what it has to do with losing weight.

(0:46) Dr. Young: Well the pH miracle and the balancing of your fluids in the body is of utmost importance because there is some confusion here. It is not that we are overweight it is that we are over acid. Our bodies’ constantly need energy and there is a waste product in energy productions, which are acids. If our body doesn’t eliminate acids through urination, defecation, perspiration, or respiration, that acid gets parked on our hips, on our thighs, our buttocks, our waste line, our breasts or in our brain and this is what makes us fat. Obesity or over weight is not a fat problem, it is an over acid problem.

(1:23) Carol Lin: So balancing the internal pH of your body, how do you do that? Does it have to do with diet and what we eat?

(I:28) Dr. Young: You do it with what you eat, what you drink, even your thoughts can make you over acidic. So it is really important to focus on more alkalizing foods like spinach and parsley.

(1:40) Carol Lin: I have to explain the side panel on the screen. We are listing a bunch of acidic foods. These are food you are saying we should avoid, beef, chicken, dairy products? Those are really the foundation of most people’s diets.

(I:50) Dr. Young: Well the foundation of most people’s diets, the standard American diet, is over acid. When we are over acid this is what makes us sick, tired, and overweight. So animal proteins and dairy products, even the wrong kind of water, acidic water, drinking carbonated water, these are acids that build up in our system and if not eliminated can build up in our fatty tissues and connective tissues and it is acid that makes us fat.

(2:17) Carol Lin: So you are saying that we should be more green? We should eat more greens you are listing leafy greens, cucumbers, olive oils.

(2:24) Dr. Young: Exactly, we need to move more towards an alkalizing diet. More green food and drinks and also healthy fats. Good healthy fats like from fish, sea bass, trout, salmon even mackerel or tuna. Al well as seed oils from flax seeds or hemp seeds and olive oil. These fats can actually neutralize acidity and help us to become more healthy and energetic, and help us to maintain our ideal healthy weight.

(2:50) Carol Lin: So what do you eat for breakfast? You can’t have cheese, you can’t have eggs. Can’t have dairy.

(2:56) Dr. Young: This is where my wife comes in. She has created some incredible recipes. Shelly the co author of,  “The pH Miracle for Weight Loss” has provided over one hundred recipes in the pH miracle book, on how to alkalize. One of the most important meals that needs to change Is breakfast. I know this may sound strange, but eating a salad or vegetable soup for breakfast, or even some steamed veggies, broccoli of spinach, even in the morning we make a green shake with cucumbers and avocado rather than going to protein  we go to alkalizing foods.

(3:33) Carol Lin: Tell the kids, it may not go over, Kicks cereal looks pretty good at 8:00 in the morning sometimes. Let’s show some of the results. Take a looks at some of these pictures. It’s hard to believe that these people lost so much weight  well making those basic choices.

(3:50) Dr. Young: When you move to a more alkaline diet you can lose up to one pound a day. It is not about calories, it’s not about protein, and it’s not about fat and it not about carbohydrates. Its weather rot not the food is alkalizing to the fluids of the body or acidifying to the fluids of the body. Because our body is only as healthy as the water it is bathed in.  The pH of our bodies is balanced at 7.365.

(4:16) Carol Lin: And You also say that exercise can make you fat. So you are saying don’t exercise?

(4:23) Dr. Robert Young: No, It’s not that exercise is bad. Its when we over exercise we produce lactic acid. That lactic acid is thrown out into the fatty tissues which can cause the body to go into preservation mode, which can also make us sick, tired and fat.

(4:40) Carol Lin: Alright well I don’t have to count calories, and I don’t have to exercise…..

(4:44) Dr. Robert Young: You have to exercise! Exercise is important. The most important part of exercising is sweating because you eliminate acids through perspiration. When you over exercise is when it is not good for you. So defiantly exercise!
