Fact: Research proves that alkaline water makes calcium more bioavailable (absorb-able) to your body ^[1], and drinking alkaline water has been also been proven to counteract the impact of dietary acid on bone loss even in people that get enough calcium in their diets. ^[2] Even skeptics are beginning to admit that alkaline water has a positive link to bone health!

A study performed on rats makes it easy to see how effective alkaline water is in supplying calcium. The image on the left shows two rats that were deprived of calcium in their food. Both rats were given calcium in their water, which researchers referred to as “calcium sufficient water”. The rat on the left was given calcium-sufficient tap water (pH 7) it shows visible signs of calcium deficiency such as hair loss, and researchers reported that it’s bones broke easily. The rat on the right was given calcium-sufficient ionized alkaline water (pH 8 – 9) and it showed no signs of calcium deficiency, even though it received no calcium in its diet!

Researchers divided 36 rats into 6 groups. Three of the groups were used as control groups, and were given adequate dietary calcium in their food. The other three groups were not given any calcium in their food. One control group received alkaline water, and one calcium deficient group received alkaline water.

During the study period, the concentration of calcium in the rats’ urine was measured. To find out how well the rats in the study actually absorbed the calcium that they received. Researchers found that rats given alkaline water (groups 3, 6) tended to have lower levels of calcium in their urine than the other groups, which indicates that the rats were retaining the calcium rather than losing it in their urine.

At the end of the study period, the rats were dissected in order to measure the calcium concentration in various body tissues and it was discovered that rats given alkaline water retained significantly higher calcium in their tissues and organs than all other groups. Based on the results of both the urine testing, and the tissue testing, the researchers concluded that alkaline water improves the bioavailability of calcium.

Alkaline Water Good for Bone Health even if you get enough Calcium in your Diet

Animal studies can tell researchers a lot, but they are not considered to be medical proof. A human study was conducted to find out if alkaline water had an impact on bone resorption – the process by which osteoclasts break down bone and release minerals. In this study, 30 female dieticians were divided into two groups. The first group drank calcium-rich alkaline water; the second group drank calcium-rich acid water.

To measure the rate of bone resorption, researchers measured two bone markers – levels of substances in the blood and urine – (referred to in the study as PTH and S-CTX) that are associated with bone loss. The two groups were tested at the beginning of the study to make sure that their levels of bone markers were the same. During the study, both groups consumed an identical diet (with sufficient calcium intake).

Both groups had their bone markers measured at 2 weeks, and again at 4 weeks.  The tests revealed that the bone markers were significantly lower in the group that drank alkaline water. Based on the test results, the researchers concluded: “In calcium sufficiency, the acid calcium-rich water had no effect on bone resorption, while the alkaline water rich in bicarbonate led to a significant decrease of PTH and of S-CTX.”

Conclusions

The results of these studies point to one obvious conclusion: Alkaline water makes calcium more bioavailable.  Both studies showed that alkaline water improved calcium absorption, whether there was sufficient calcium in the diet or not. There are even indications that alkaline water may be safer than bisphosphonate-based medications for maintaining bone health!

Alkaline Water Fan

Arpee Lazaro is a professional food critic who blogs for an Asian food review site called Pinoy Life at Large. Lazaro has become a huge fan of ionized alkaline water since he began noticing health benefits. In a recent blog post he writes: “The benefits of alkaline ionized water have proven to be crucial to my work.”

Small Changes make a Big Difference!

An article in the Miami Herald posted on Tuesday pointed out that small changes in pH make a big difference. A drop in pH of just one tenth of a point (0.1 pH) increases acidity by 26%. The article warned that a drop of 0.1 pH had been detected in the earth’s oceans, and consequences such as the loss of coral reefs, are already occurring.

Pollution by dilution?

A recent announcement by government officials that they were going to recommend reducing the levels of fluoride added to water because of health concerns was no surprise to many health advocates that have been concerned about potential dangers of fluoride for years. Government officials cited concerns about florosis, a condition that affects tooth enamel development in children, causing their teeth to become spotted.

EPA cites report that suggests long term exposure can be harmful

Fluoride has been controversial ever since municipalities began adding it to drinking water in the 1940’s. A report cited by the EPA states that people who consume too much fluoride in their lifetime face the risk of crippling bone abnormalities. The EPA has not officially released recommendations for the new lower fluoride levels, and there is no word of how long it would take local water authorities to adjust fluoridation levels.

Pollution through dilution

The fluoride compound most frequently used to fluoridate water is hydrofluosilicic acid, which is a byproduct of the process used to manufacture fertilizer. Health advocates concerned about adding hydrofluosilicic acid to water point out that the compound frequently contains high amounts of lead, mercury, arsenic, and high concentrations of radionucleides.

Hydrofluosilicic acid should not be confused with calcium fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral compound that is found in nature. Calcium fluoride is non toxic; even a small amount of hydrofluosilicic acid in concentrated form can be lethal.

Bottled water is not safe

While many consumers turn to bottled water to avoid toxins like hydrofluosilicic acid, studies show that samples of bottled water regularly contain significant amounts of fluoride. Consumers should be aware that most bottled water is simply filtered tap water.

Filtration is not enough

The addition of hydrofluosilicic acid to water lowers the pH of water. Since most tap water is acidic, it is likely that hydrofluosilicic acid is a substantial contributor. A study released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) provided the first ever survey of the suspected carcinogen hexavalent chromium in the nation’s tap water. Also known as chromium-6, the public was first made aware of the cancer danger posed by the chemical in the movie Erin Brokovich. Upon hearing of the EWG study, Brokovich herself stated: “This chemical has been so widely used by so many industries across the U.S. that this doesn’t surprise me”

EPA Warns that the Agency may not be able to Protect Public

The head of the EPA, Lisa P. Jackson, announced new measures to detect the presence of hexavalent chromium in drinking water within hours of the announcement of the EWG study, but according to Jackson, detection may not translate into action or protection.

The Huffington Post published an article written by Jackson where she acknowledges rising public concern about the danger of hexavalent chromium, stating that the outcry has been nationwide. However, Jackson warns of partisan obstruction to the EPA’s efforts saying: “others have called EPA’s science into question and pledged to curtail EPA’s ability to tackle challenges just like this one.”

The use of hexavalent chromium has been severely restricted or banned for use in many instances, but some industries such as plastics, chrome plating, and dye manufacturing still use it. These industries oppose EPA efforts to regulate hexavalent chromium. Some municipal water utilities worry that regulation of the toxin may prove cost prohibitive, and oppose it for that reason.

Good healthy fats like from fish, sea bass, trout, salmon even mackerel or tuna. Al well as seed oils from flax seeds or hemp seeds and olive oil. These fats can actually neutralize acidity and help us to become more healthy and energetic, and help us to maintain our ideal healthy weight.

(2:50) Carol Lin: So what do you eat for breakfast? You can’t have cheese, you can’t have eggs. Can’t have dairy.

(2:56) Dr. Young: This is where my wife comes in. She has created some incredible recipes. Shelly the co author of,  “The pH Miracle for Weight Loss” has provided over one hundred recipes in the pH miracle book, on how to alkalize. One of the most important meals that needs to change Is breakfast. I know this may sound strange, but eating a salad or vegetable soup for breakfast, or even some steamed veggies, broccoli of spinach, even in the morning we make a green shake with cucumbers and avocado rather than going to protein  we go to alkalizing foods.

(3:33) Carol Lin: Tell the kids, it may not go over, Kicks cereal looks pretty good at 8:00 in the morning sometimes. Let’s show some of the results. Take a looks at some of these pictures. It’s hard to believe that these people lost so much weight  well making those basic choices.

(3:50) Dr. Young: When you move to a more alkaline diet you can lose up to one pound a day. It is not about calories, it’s not about protein, and it’s not about fat and it not about carbohydrates. Its weather rot not the food is alkalizing to the fluids of the body or acidifying to the fluids of the body. Because our body is only as healthy as the water it is bathed in.  The pH of our bodies is balanced at 7.365.

(4:16) Carol Lin: And You also say that exercise can make you fat. So you are saying don’t exercise?

(4:23) Dr. Robert Young: No, It’s not that exercise is bad. Its when we over exercise we produce lactic acid. That lactic acid is thrown out into the fatty tissues which can cause the body to go into preservation mode, which can also make us sick, tired and fat.

(4:40) Carol Lin: Alright well I don’t have to count calories, and I don’t have to exercise…..

(4:44) Dr. Robert Young: You have to exercise! Exercise is important. The most important part of exercising is sweating because you eliminate acids through perspiration. When you over exercise is when it is not good for you. So defiantly exercise!

Point of use filter and bottle water sales are at a all time high – by treating the water you drink may be only a partial solution to the whole problem.

The reason? People may face a far more serious health threat from the air they breath – and the primary contributor to household air pollution may be the water they use.

That household water can introduce hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like chloroform into a home’s atmosphere is a little-known fact. This is understandable because, with the exception of radon, most consumer research identifies tobacco smoke, certain heating units and constructions materials, carpets and wallpaper as air pollution culprits.

To complicate matters, the health risk associated with exposure to waterborne chemicals is normally based on the assumption that people drink two liters of water daily. Little consideration is given to the fact that exposure to waterborne VOCs is six times greater through inhalation and skin absorption than from direct consumption.

The threat is also widespread. For example, 75 percent of Americans are on “municipally treated” water supplies most of which use chlorine for disinfecting water. Because chlorine can form trihalomethanes (THMs) when it encounters waterborne organic substances, THMs exist at some level in most municipal water systems.

THMs include chloroform, bromoform, dibromochloromethane and bromodichloroethane. Chloroform (CHCI₃) is a VOC that acts on the central nervous system. After it was determined that is produced cancer in animals, chloroform’s use was curtailed in many products.

In 1970 the discovery of chloroform in the blood of many New Orleans residents triggered a search for the source, soon identified as drinking water. This discovery prompted the passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) OF 1974 which, among other things, limited total THMs to 100 parts per billion (ppb). This limit assumed the average person ingests two liters of water daily. The limit of 100 THM is a Maximum Contamination Limit (MCL) and assumes an accepted risk of 1 debt per 100,000 population distribution per year at that level. The maximum safe level (MSL) for any identified carcinogenic is “0”.

Municipalities test water for excessive levels of THMs when it leaves the treatment plant and at downstream sites, but the conversion of organic chemicals to chloroform continues as water travels through the distribution system. This can take up to a week in a large system, so levels of THMs will often be higher when the water reaches your customer than when the municipality measured them.

How much higher depends on the quantity and type of organic chemicals present, the length of time the water remains in the distribution system and the amount of excess chlorine injected into the water.

It can even depend on the season, to a degree. In the summer, raw water sources are warmer and plant and animal activity is higher. The result is increased organic loading in the raw water, particularly if it’s a surface water source. Municipalities must then add more chlorine, so water contains higher levels of resulting THMs.

Municipalities experiencing seasonal THM problems can continue to operate under a six-month variance, long enough for the problem to disappear until the next summer.

VOCs at Home

Studies by the Center for Environmental Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh published in Environmental Science and Technology conclude VOCs like chloroform evaporate rapidly during normal household activities such as dish washing, using the garbage disposal, doing the laundry, cleaning, bathing and flushing the toilet.

The studies indicate that, at normal shower temperatures, about 50 percent of chloroform in water escapes into the air – before the water even reaches the shower floor. This level of exposure exceeds that of ingestion by 600 percent, the studies indicate.

EPA studies have also concluded that exposure to many carcinogenic chemicals is six times greater through breathing and skin absorption than through drinking. In effect, it doesn’t matter whether your customers or prospects drink the water of not; normal household exposure is enough to be concerned about.

Even well owners with private water systems are at risk. Trichloroethylene (TCE) from industrial site contamination and petroleum distillates from gas station leaks are a major contributor to ground water contamination. All this VOCs have similar volatilization rates; therefore the risk of inhalation for each is similar. Radon, still an understated risk, also falls into this “volatilization profile”.

For radon levels exceeding the adsorption capabilities of standard POE carbon units, POE aeration is recommended as a pretreatment. In industrial applications, stacked tower aeration is the preferred treatment process for radon removal.

VOC removal with adsorption units can be completely effective as long as the units are maintained and sized properly for the applicable flow rate. A rule of thumb for unit sizing is that the average household demand is 5 to 6 gallons per minute (gpm). A cubic-foot system should suffice for most VOC removal at this flow rate for systems installed on municipally treated water.

If VOCs are present in a well, caution must be taken to identify additional problems which may cause a reduction in the adsorption process. Iron, for example, rapidly uses up a large portion of the carbon’s surface area. It should be removed before water enters the carbon unit.

Most properly sized POE carbon units treat the water used by an average household for 12 to 18 months, but the only way to tell if a unit is approaching exhaustion is through testing.

Whether you use municipal water or well water, VOC intrusion may exist. If samples tested by a certified testing laboratory indicate the presence of VOCs, you runs a greater risk of exposure through inhalation and skin absorption than by ingestion. The recommended treatment is Point of Entry Filtration System.
