Alkaline Water Science | How antioxidants work

Alkaline water, combined with a other antioxidants such as Vitamin C, can produce a potent antioxidant effect. Research suggests that the reason for this is that the process of breaking down free radicals  requires two steps:

1. Break down Superoxide – a free radical – into water and Hydrogen Peroxide

2. Reduce hydrogen peroxide down to  water

Free radicals are reduced to water in a two step process

Alkaline water by itself doesn’t break down Superoxide, but it does improve the antioxidant effects of antioxidants like vitamin C that do. Superoxide is broken down into hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen. Hydrogen peroxide is still an oxidant, so it has to be broken down to stop it from harming your tissues. You may have read that alkaline water with a high negative ORP is an antioxidant. The fact is, alkaline water with a high negative ORP has antioxidant potential – but that potential needs to be unlocked for you to benefit from it.

Antioxidant supplements vs Fruits and Vegetables

Research on antioxidant supplements in the body have shown no clear relationship between taking antioxidants and health. There is evidence that antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables reduce risks of some illnesses. The reason fruits and vegetables have health protective effects may have more to do with the other nutrients in them.

Bottom Line: Clinical trials have shown that antioxidant supplements have no effect on health problems, but fruit and vegetables do.
