Water Ionizers and Alkalinity: MESH Plates Clearly the Best Choice

Article

Many water ionizers sold today offer either traditional flat plates or MESH plates. Companies such as LIFE Ionizers offer both flat and the advanced MESH plates and states that MESH plates are better because they provide more surface area for water to flow over. Other companies such as Enagic® which offers only flat plates in their ionizers, argue that their flat plates are very durable, and work just as well as MESH plates. Many water ionizer review sites claim to test ionizers equipped with flat and MESH plates, and present results that tend to favor the technology used in the machines they sell (no surprise). The reason for the wide range... read more >>

Alkaline Water May Stop Bone Loss, Even Skeptics Agree

Article

Experts aren’t certain Alkaline water has faced a lot of criticism from medical and scientific sources which question its health benefits, or even if there is such a thing as alkalized water. Skeptics point to a lack of long term studies supporting the benefits of alkaline water, and some even suggest that it is a modern “snake oil”. This article examines the link between alkalinity and bone loss, which even skeptics of alkaline water admit exists. Columbia University provides health & wellness advice on its website for faculty and students. An advice column called Go Ask Alice addresses a question about alkaline water posed by one of... read more >>

Terrorism on Tap: The Nation’s Drinking Water Threatened

Article

A study released jointly by the EPA and the Department of Homeland Defense on the vulnerability of the nation’s water supply to sabotage by terrorists suggests that in-home treatment systems could be an effective defense against contamination threats. The study was intended to review the state-of-the-art in Point of Use (POU) and Point of Entry (POE) water treatment systems, and determine which technologies were most likely to be effective in protecting the public from water supply-based terrorism. Researchers evaluated the ability of commonly available treatment systems to protect the public from biological, chemical, and nuclear water contamination. The... read more >>

Carbon Sequestration a Serious Source of Groundwater Pollution

Article

A new study by Duke University has revealed that leakage of carbon dioxide injected deep underground to help fight climate change is turning up in drinking water aquifers near the surface, spiking the levels of contaminants found in the water tenfold or more in some places. Governments and industry are turning to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in an effort to prevent carbon from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming. CCS captures the carbons produced by oil refineries, factories, or power plants and stores it deep below Earth’s surface, in a process known as geosequestration. Robert P. Jackson of Duke University points... read more >>

Point of Entry Systems Reduce VOC Risks

Article

At-the-tap treatment won’t do the whole job. Point of use filter and bottle water sales are at a all time high – by treating the water you drink may be only a partial solution to the whole problem. The reason? People may face a far more serious health threat from the air they breath – and the primary contributor to household air pollution may be the water they use. That household water can introduce hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like chloroform into a home’s atmosphere is a little-known fact. This is understandable because, with the exception of radon, most consumer research identifies tobacco smoke, certain heating units... read more >>

Study Finds Increased Risk of Stomach Illness from Tap Water

Article

A study conducted by researchers from the University Of California Berkley School Of Public Health has found that drinking tap water is associated with a higher risk of stomach illnesses in persons over age 55. The study, which tracked the rates of gastrointestinal diseases in 998 elderly participants, was conducted in upscale Sonoma County. The tap water in Sonoma County is considered to be of high quality; the water comes from a protected source in the mountains, and is properly treated. Sonoma County tap water easily meets all Federal and state water quality standards. Half of the participants in the study received water filtration systems... read more >>

Toilet-to-Tap 2010: Do You Drink Poo?

Article

If you live in the U.S or the U.K, the answer is… probably yes. Reports of wastewater discharges, and the efforts to stop them have been frequent in 2010. Sewage discharges were reported in cities that have rivers which supply large regions with drinking water. If you get your water from the Mississippi river, some of your water goes from toilet to tap. The city of Bettendorf Iowa alone discharged 67 million gallons of sewage into the Mississippi river in 2009. In June of 2010, the city of St. Louis Mo. had an accidental discharge over the course of several days that dumped 4.6 million gallons of waste into the Mississippi per day. The Great... read more >>
