Benefits of Alkaline Water - Using Alkaline Water for Health

Alkaline Water Benefits: How to use alkaline water for health

Alkaline water has many health benefits, backed up by over 40 studies that document them. It’s important to know what the benefits of alkaline water are, so you know if it may be able to help you. But more importantly, you will learn how alkaline water was used in each study to get the benefits discussed in the study. In short, this page is a practical guide that will show you how to use alkaline water to improve your health.

Among the things you will learn about how to use alkaline water to improve and/or manage your specific health condition, you will learn:

  • • What pH and antioxidant ORP level water was used in the study
  • • How much alkaline water the test subjects drank
  • • When and how they consumed the water
  • • How long it took for health benefits to appear
  • • What kind of benefits resulted from the study

You will also learn how to test yourself, to see if alkaline water is benefiting you. Some tests only a doctor can perform, you’ll learn what those are, and when to ask your doctor to test you.

Talk to your doctor: If you are under the care of a doctor for specific health problems, and you are planning to manage your specific health conditions with alkaline water, we strongly recommend you continue to follow the advice of your doctor to the letter. Only your doctor knows for sure if you can reduce or stop taking your medications. You should also talk to your doctor, and tell them that you’re planning to start drinking alkaline water. There are some health conditions where your doctor will want to tightly control your body’s pH levels. Drinking alkaline water affects your body’s pH levels, and you don’t want to interfere with the course of treatment that you are under.

Do you have Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a disease that can occur if your body has difficulty controlling it’s pH balance. It has multiple symptoms, including:

  • • Morbid obesity
  • • High blood pressure
  • • Bone loss
  • • High blood sugar
  • • Low urine pH
  • • High cholesterol
  • • Kidney Stones

If you have at least half of these symptoms, you may have metabolic syndrome. If you suspect you have it, your first step should be to talk to your doctor about it. Your doctor will likely want to perform some tests that you can’t do at home. THe good news is that if you have metabolic syndrome, alkaline water and medications prescribed by your doctor can work together to fight back. Metabolic syndrome is reversible if you catch it in time and do the right things to fight it.

Research on alkaline water for metabolic syndrome

A study called The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report examined middle-aged adults that showed some of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome, including

  • • Morbid obesity
  • • High blood pressure
  • • Bone loss

Who were the people in the study: This study examined four middle-aged adults that were morbidly obese and had other symptoms of metabolic syndrome, who had never drank alkaline water before.

pH of the water used: 10.4 with a antioxidant ORP of -250 or greater
How much was drank: 2 liters per day
When the water was drank: Throughout the day at test subjects discretion
When did health benefits appear: After one month

What kind of benefits resulted from the study:

  • • Weight loss: An average of 12 pounds over two months
  • • Detoxification: Subjects discharged 10 heavy metals in their urine
  • • Lower blood pressure
  • • Reduced bone loss
  • • Antioxidant ‘sparing’ effect

The study lasted for two months. Test subjects showed improvement after the first month, and benefits continued to accumulate over the entire two month period. Each of the test subjects saw significant improvements in the symptoms of their metabolic syndrome.

What you should do: Drink 2 liters of alkaline water from a water ionizer at a pH of 10 or greater. Watch your weight to see if you lose weight. If your doctor says you have metabolic syndrome, tell them you’re starting alkaline water, and ask for a follow-up visit either one or two months after starting alkaline water to see if it is helping you.

Alkaline water benefits for health problems

Alkaline water has been suggested in multiple studies as a "novel therapeutic intervention" for several different health problems. What that means is that research on alkaline water is relatively new, more work needs to be done to fully understand its effects.

What you need to know and talk to your doctor about

Alkaline water isn’t a drug. Unlike drugs, relief from the symptoms of any health condition come gradually. Because of this, you shouldn’t quit any medications you are currently taking cold turkey. Instead, if your doctor has you on any prescribed medications, you should tell your doctor that you’re planning to start drinking alkaline water. Your doctor may have advice on what pH level you should drink, how much you should drink, or when you should drink.

AIf you find that alkaline water is relieving your symptoms, you should talk to your doctor about reducing your dosage. There are many medications that can have harmful effects if you quit cold turkey, or even taper off too soon. Your doctor will want to monitor your progress as you reduce your dosage of any medications.

For best results: Don’t take alkaline water with medications, it may cause your body to absorb the medicines too fast. Instead, use the purified water setting on your ionizer to get clean water for taking medications

alkaline water benefits for bone loss

Alkaline Water and Bone loss

Some of the most well documented benefits of alkaline water are for bone health. Even the prestigious Mayo Clinic agrees: There is a link between alkaline water and bone health. Drinking alkaline water has been shown in multiple studies to have the following benefits for bone health:

  • • Lowers enzyme markers of bone loss
  • • Raises blood pH
  • • Supplies easy-to-absorb calcium and magnesium

Research on alkaline water for bone health

Doctors measure the rate that you are losing bone by measuring the levels of two enzymes in the blood: C-telopeptides (CTX) and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH). To measure alkaline water’s effect on bone loss, researchers conducted a study called Alkaline mineral water lowers bone resorption even in calcium sufficiency.

Researchers compared the effects of drinking a calcium rich alkaline water to a calcium rich acidic water in 30 female dieticians, at an average age of 26.3 years. They compared urine pH levels, calcium excretion, and CTX/PTH levels.

Alkaline water used in the study:
Water pH = 9.0
Calcium= 520 mg/L
Amount consumed: 1.5 liters per day
How long it took to see benefits: 2 - 4 weeks

What the researchers found:

Alkaline mineral water
  • • Raised urine pH
  • • Increased calcium excretion
  • • CTX/PTH hormone levels decreased
Acidic mineral water
  • • No effect on urine pH
  • • Increased calcium excretion
  • • No effect on CTX/PTH levels

What these results mean

The pH level of the water is more important than the calcium level: Both groups discharged similar levels of calcium, so increased calcium had little to no effect. The alkaline water raised urine pH and significantly reduced levels of both CTX and PTH. Acidic water had no effect on urine pH, and it had no effect on CTX and PTH levels.

How to use alkaline water for bone health What you should do:Drink at least 1 and a half liters of alkaline water with a pH of 9 or higher every day. If your doctor is monitoring your bone loss, have it checked before you start alkaline water. Have your doctor check again after you’ve been drinking alkaline water for four weeks. If your doctor reports that your CTX and PTH levels are lower, alkaline water is helping you reduce bone loss.

  • Use: Alkaline water with a pH of 9 or higher
  • Drink: 1.5 liters per day
  • Have your doctor check your rate of bone loss

alkaline water benefits for blood pressure

Alkaline Water and Blood pressure

High blood pressure is an illness that has reached epidemic proportions in the US, despite the availability of expensive blood pressure medications. But a Life-saving procedure used by doctors on heart-attack patients in emergencies offers an important clue to reducing blood pressure and preventing heart attacks and strokes: Doctors save heart attack victims lives by giving them a shot of magnesium. That magnesium immediately lowers the patient’s blood pressure, and enables blood to reach their heart.

Most people get enough magnesium in their diet, yet high blood pressure and heart attacks continue to claim lives at an astonishing rate; so what gives?

Minerals in water: The missing part of the high blood pressure story

Research has shown that even if you get enough minerals in your diet, you may still not absorb enough minerals for good health. That is because water is the most-easily absorbed form of mineral nutrition. The World Health Organization recommends getting 10 - 20% of your daily needs for calcium and magnesium from the water you drink.

What you need to know: Water hardness measures the amount of minerals in water. The harder the water, the more minerals are in it.

Research on alkaline water for blood pressure

"The more alkaline the water, the greater the protective effect on human arteries" Was the conclusion researchers came to in "Hard Water and the Heart: The story revisited" - the largest ever review of studies on the effect of drinking water on the heart and blood pressure. This study reviewed many studies on water and blood pressure - that included 10’s of thousands of people, over the course of several decades - and found that there is a strong correlation between water pH and hardness and good blood pressure health.

What researchers found:

  • • Drinking water with high hardness and an alkaline pH results in lower blood pressure and lower rates of heart disease
  • • Drinking soft water (low minerals) and a neutral or acidic pH results in higher blood pressure and higher rates of heart disease

How much minerals do you need in water for good health?

Research shows that water becomes healthy for your heart when calcium is 94 mg/L and magnesium in water shows a protective effect at between 4 and 11 mg/L

How can I find out how much minerals are in my water?

Call Life Ionizers at 877 586-4299 and request a free water quality report. Ask the consultant to examine the calcium and magnesium levels in your report.

How to use alkaline water for lowering blood pressure

What you should do: Drink at least 2 liters of alkaline water per day with a pH greater than 9. Check your blood pressure before starting alkaline water. Check it again at one month and at two months

  • • Drink at least two liters per day
  • • Check your blood pressure before and at one and two months after starting alkaline water
  • • Use alkaline water with a pH of 9 or greater

alkaline water benefits for high cholesterol

Alkaline Water and High Cholesterol

Clinical testing has shown that drinking alkaline water may help you lower your cholesterol levels. One study showed that drinking alkaline water reduced the levels of the two most dangerous types of cholesterol "The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report" showed that drinking alkaline water lowered levels of Very-Low density Lipoproteins (V-LDS) and Triglycerides.

Research on alkaline water and high cholesterol

The study, "The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report" evaluated the effects of alkaline water on four obese, middle-aged persons who had never drank it before. All four subjects suffered from higher-than-normal cholesterol levels.

What researchers found: Researchers tested the cholesterol levels of the test subjects before they started alkaline water, and then again at one month and two months. All subjects had significantly reduced levels of both Very-Low density Lipoproteins (V-LDS) and Triglycerides.

Average V-LDL cholesterol levels during study for all four test subjects

  • • Before starting alkaline water: 22.2 mg/dl
  • • After one month: 20 mg/dl
  • • After two months: 17.5 mg/dl
  • • Average reduction in V-LDL cholesterol: 4.7 mg/dl (reduction of 14%)

The range forV-LDL cholesterol is from 5 to 40 mg/dl. The closer you are to 5 mg/dl, the better your V-LDL cholesterol. Drinking alkaline water lowered test subjects V-LDL cholesterol by an average of 14%.

Average triglyceride levels during the study for all four test subjects

  • • Before starting study: 110 mg/dl
  • • After one month: 103 mg/dl
  • • After two months: 87.2 mg/dl
  • • Average reduction in triglycerides: 22.8 mg/dl (reduction of 20.7%)

The range for triglycerides is from 0 to 149 mg/dl. The closer you are to zero, the better your triglyceride levels. Drinking alkaline water lowered test subjects triglycerides by an average of 20.7% [A very significant drop!]

How to use alkaline water for reducing cholesterol

Test subjects drank two liters of alkaline water with an average pH of 10.2 - 10.6 and an ORP of -250 to -350. Have your doctor test your cholesterol levels before you start alkaline water, and then again after two months

  • • Use alkaline water with a pH of 10 or higher and an ORP more negative than -250
  • • Drink two or more liters per day
  • • Have your doctor test your cholesterol levels before you start alkaline water, and again after two months

alkaline water benefits for high blood sugar diabetes

Alkaline Water and High blood sugar

Alkaline water for blood sugar problems has shown promise in studies on mice. Currently, we can’t find any clinical trials on humans, so we can’t make any recommendations. Various testimonials from water ionizer owners suggest that some may have found benefits for their blood sugar levels from drinking alkaline water. Those testimonies must be verified in clinical testing to be considered by research.

alkaline water benefits for acid reflux

Alkaline Water and Acid Reflux

There is solid evidence that drinking alkaline water can control the symptoms of acid reflux. Especially if combined with a sensible diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, drinking alkaline water may completely eliminate the painful burning of acid reflux.

Research on alkaline water and acid reflux

A laboratory study called "Potential Benefits of PH 8.8 Alkaline Drinking Water as an Adjunct in the Treatment of Reflux Disease" discovered that alkaline water permanently inactivates pepsin, the enzyme that triggers the painful burning of acid reflux. Inactivating pepsin effectively stops acid reflux from happening.

You may be able to stop taking medicine for your acid reflux if you switch to a Mediterranean diet and drink alkaline water. A clinical study called "A Comparison of Alkaline Water and Mediterranean Diet vs Proton Pump Inhibition for Treatment of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux" examined 99 patients with acid reflux who changed to the Mediterranean diet (a 90% plant-based diet) and started drinking alkaline water. The study found that the patients who consumed the Mediterranean diet and alkaline water found the same or better level of relief as 85 other patients that took PPI drugs such as Nexium.

Acid reflux and Alkaline Water

You should drink two or more liters per day of alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 or higher. For best results, you should replace your entire intake of water with alkaline water (except with meals) this includes making your coffee or tea with alkaline water. Drink high pH water if you are experiencing symptoms. Any time you are actively experiencing acid reflux symptoms, use level 4 alkaline water from your water ionizer to get the highest pH alkaline water you can. The higher pH can help speed relief of symptoms.

  • • Switch to the Mediterranean or other 90% plant-based diet
  • • Drink 2+ liters of alkaline water per day at a pH of 8.8 or greater
  • • Monitor yourself for symptoms of acid reflux
  • • As your symptoms subside, reduce and/or eliminate your medication*

*Talk you your doctor before cutting your medications if you are under a doctor’s treatment for acid reflux

Digestive problems other than acid reflux

Research done in Japan in the 1960’s resulted in that country declaring that water ionizers are medical devices that can be used in the treatment of mild, chronic digestive upset. In double blinded, fully randomized, placebo controlled clinical testing (the gold standard in medical research) Japanese researchers found that 88% of the patients they treated with mild digestive upset found full or partial relief by just drinking alkaline water alone. What kind of mild digestive upset is alkaline water used to treat?

  • • Chronic diarrhea
  • • Constipation
  • • Gas/bloating
  • • Indigestion
  • • Acid indigestion
  • • Other complaints

Research on alkaline water for digestive health

The studies that Japan used to certify water ionizers as medical devices is called "The Summary of "Electrolytic Water in Medical Treatment". Those studies examined many different ways that alkaline water affects the digestive system. That research resulted in two very important findings that have defined much of what we know about how to use alkaline water to manage illnesses and improve health:

  • • Relief from alkaline water comes gradually
  • • Alkaline water temporarily raises the pH of an empty stomach

Gradual relief: If you’ve read previous sections of this report, you’ve noticed that we recommended that you test yourself for improvements at one and two months after starting alkaline water. This is because it is well documented that relief comes gradually when you drink alkaline water. Unlike drugs, which have almost immediate effects, the benefit of alkaline water builds up over time.

Stomach pH: Japanese researchers noted that alkaline water had a mild antacid effect. To find out why, the measured alkaline water’s effect on stomach pH. What they found was amazing: Alkaline water raised stomach pH (on an empty stomach) by .5 to 1 pH! That may not sound like a lot, but it is: The pH scale is logarithmic, an increase of a pH of 1 is a ten-fold increase in alkalinity!

There is a war being fought in your gut. That war is between beneficial microbes, called Probiotics, and harmful microbes. A study called "Selective stimulation of the growth of anaerobic microflora in the human intestinal tract by electrolyzed reducing water" showed that the beneficial probiotic microbes thrive in an antioxidative environment, while the harmful microbes thrive in an oxidative environment. The study authors recommended drinking alkaline water to restore a healthy balance of probiotic microbes in the gut.

How to use alkaline water for the treatment of mild digestive upset

In the Japanese clinical trials, patients were given 2 liters of alkaline water per day at a pH of 9.5. So you should plan to drink 2 liters of alkaline water per day with a pH of at least 9.5. If you’ve read previous sections of this report, you know that we recommend drinking two liters per day when using alkaline water to treat health issues. This recommendation is followed in all of the alkaline research discussed in this report. To use alkaline water for the treatment of mild digestive upset:

  • • Drink 2 or more liters per day of alkaline water at a pH of 9.5 or greater
  • • Monitor your digestive upset symptoms
  • • Full or partial relief should come in about 2 weeks
  • • Talk to your doctor before stopping or reducing any prescription medications

alkaline water benefits for alzheimer dementia brain

Alkaline water for Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Lab research on alkaline water for Alzheimer’s and Dementia showed that alkaline water protected several different types of brain cells from damage caused by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Those ROS damage and destroy brain tissue through oxidation, and are considered to be a factor in Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Research on alkaline water for Alzheimer’s and Dementia

It is important to note that research on alkaline water for Alzheimer’s and Dementia has only been conducted in the lab, not in clinical trials. The finding of that research need to be confirmed in clinical trials before any recommendations can be made for potential treatment.

The study, called "Electrochemically Reduced Water Protects Neural Cells from Oxidative Damage" showed that alkaline water scavenged the ROS molecules that damage and destroy brain tissue, thereby preventing the damage. This suggests that drinking alkaline water may help protect the brain against oxidative damage.

Alkaline water benefits for improving your health

Alkaline water supports general wellness. Maintaining and improving your health, before you develop diseases, is the best way to use alkaline water. Alkaline water can certainly help with managing the symptoms of some diseases, (see above) but, as the old saying goes: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

alkaline water benefits balance ph

Maintain your pH balance with Alkaline Water

Your body’s pH balance affects every aspect of your health. A young, or normally healthy body can manage acidity all on its own, but as we age, our body’s alkaline buffer begins to decline. After the age of 50, our bodies can use a little help managing acidity. Controlling the body’s pH provides many benefits, such as:

  • • Maintain healthy bones
  • • Reduces acid load on the kidneys that can lead to kidney problems
  • • Support healthy energy levels
  • • Maintain good digestive health
  • • Fight harmful acidity in the body

Research on alkaline water for pH balance

Clinical testing performed on 52 healthy male volunteers revealed that alkaline water can raise blood pH by 40 - 70%, restoring it to healthy levels, when the body is in a condition called metabolic acidosis: A condition where the blood pH temporarily drops below safe levels. Blood pH must remain in a pH range of 7.35 - 7.45 for the body to remain healthy. If blood pH drops below 7.35, the body is in a metabolic acidosis state.

In the study: "Hydrogen-Rich Water Affected Blood Alkalinity in Physically Active Men" (Note: Life Ionizers make hydrogen rich water) Researchers examined healthy men whose bodies were in a state of metabolic acidosis for one of either two reasons:

  • • Fasting acidosis: The body becomes more acidic when you fast
  • • Muscular acidosis: Excess acidity caused by working out

In both cases, alkaline water raised blood pH. This result was compared with a control group that drank plain tap water. The plain water had no effect on blood pH.

How to use alkaline water to maintain your pH balance

The key to maintaining your pH balance is finding out what your pH balance is to begin with. To do that, you need to test yourself. The easiest test is urine pH, you use pH test strips to monitor your urine pH over the course of 24 hours. A good, healthy urine pH balance runs between a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. The 24 hour average of your urine pH balance will determine how you use alkaline water for maintaining or improving your pH balance:

  • • If your urine pH balance is normal: Drink level 2 alkaline water every day
  • • If your urine pH balance is low: Drink level 3 alkaline water every day
  • • If your urine pH balance is low and fails to improve: See a doctor

If your urine pH balance is low, and fails to improve, you may have a serious medical condition called metabolic syndrome (discussed earlier in this report). There are effective treatments for metabolic syndrome, you doctor will discuss them with you.

alkaline water and hydration

Improve your Hydration with Alkaline Water

Want younger, fresher, and healthier looking skin? Want to beat that 3 O’Clock crash that has you dozing off at your desk? Want more energy? Then hydrate with alkaline water! Research shows that alkaline water hydrates better and faster than regular water. Better hydration is a big deal, and may have a profound influence on your health: The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 3 out of 4 Americans are chronically dehydrated.

Research on alkaline water and hydration

Research on how water moves into and out of cells revealed that it does so through tiny channels called Aquaporins. A study called "Transport of Water and Glycerol in Aquaporin 3 Is Gated by H " found that one of these aquaporin channels (AQP3) is controlled by water pH. If water is acidic, that aquaporin channel closes, and water isn’t allowed through. If the water is alkaline, the AQP3 channel opens, and allows water into the cell.

A clinical study called "Effect of electrolyzed high-pH alkaline water on blood viscosity in healthy adults" on recovery from dehydration showed that drinking alkaline water enables a person to hydrate faster and more thoroughly than if that same person drank plain water. The study also revealed that alkaline water reduced blood viscosity, which makes it easier for the heart to pump blood.

alkaline water and heavy metal detoxification

Alkaline water and Detoxification

A clinical study called "The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report" showed that people who had never drank alkaline water before excreted high levels of 10 different heavy metals from their bodies including mercury and lead.

Research on alkaline water for detoxification

Along with the previously-mentioned study, research from Sweden called "Hair element concentrations in females in one acid and one alkaline area in southern Sweden" suggests that drinking alkaline water may provide protection against the toxic effects of mercury. Women who drank well water in Sweden were tested for mercury, half drank acidic well water, half drank alkaline well water:

  • • The women who drank alkaline water had higher levels of calcium and magnesium
  • • The women who drank acidic water had higher levels of mercury, boron and barium

How to use alkaline water for detoxification

In the study "The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report" the test subjects drank 2 liters of alkaline water with a pH of 10 or higher per day.

  • • Find out if there are heavy metals in your water by calling Life Ionizers for a free water quality report at 877 586-4299
  • • Avoid heavy metals in water by drinking only properly filtered water and avoid high mercury food (tuna is the worst)
  • • Drink 2 liters of alkaline water per day at a pH of 10 or higher

alkaline water weight loss

Alkaline Water and Weight loss

12 pounds in two months. That’s the average amount of weight lost by test subjects in "The effect of daily consumption of 2 liters of electrolyzed water for 2 months on body composition and several physiological parameters in four obese subjects: a preliminary report" This study is especially relevant to older adults who want to lose weight because:

  • • The test subjects were morbidly obese
  • • They were all over 50 years of age

Research on alkaline water for weight loss

In addition to the above study, a study called "Selective stimulation of the growth of anaerobic microflora in the human intestinal tract by electrolyzed reducing water" shows that alkaline water supports beneficial probiotic microbes in the gut. This helps you lose weight because the beneficial probiotic microbes convert food into energy, harmful microbes convert food into fat storage and toxins in your gut.

Additional research conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health shows that when you drink water can affect your ability to lose weight. The Harvard research recommends drinking a glass of water a half hour before meals to reduce appetite.

How to use alkaline water for weight loss

As noted above, it’s important to know when to drink alkaline water for weight loss as well as how much, and at what pH. Here are our recommendations:

  • Have an 8 or more ounce glass of alkaline water a half hour before meals
  • Drink at least 2 liters of alkaline water per day at a pH of 10 or higher
  • Weigh yourself before starting, and then again after one and two months

alkaline water live longer

Alkaline Water and Life extension

Research on alkaline water for Life extension has been conducted only on nematodes (a type of worm) and mice. These animals are called model organisms by scientists, because their physiology is very similar to humans. But keep in mind, while these model organisms make good test cases, the results they get are not always the results that are found in human clinical trials. You should consider this information to be preliminary, it needs to be confirmed by research in humans.

There is a problem with doing this research in humans, however. An experiment to test alkaline water for Life extension in humans would have to compare two groups of humans:

  • • One that drank alkaline water for decades, until the end of their lives
  • • A group that never drank alkaline water, until the end of their lives

As you can see, that experiment would take decades to complete!

How to use alkaline water for Life extension

The best recommendation Life Ionizers can find on using alkaline water for Life extension comes from Google’s Chief of Research on Human Longevity, Dr. Ray Kurzweil: "The most important feature of alkaline water produced by a water alkalizer is its oxidation reduction potential (ORP) - the antioxidant potential is the key benefit of alkaline water". Based on Dr. Kurzweil’s advice, Life Ionizers suggests the following:

  • • Use alkaline water with the highest antioxidant potential you can get at a pH of 9.5 - 10
  • • Drink at least 2 liters of alkaline water per day

Life Ionizers guarantees: You will get higher antioxidant ORP at a pH of 9.5 from a Life Ionizer than you will from any other brand of ionizer.

Alkaline water Benefits for Athletes

Alkaline water has study-proven benefits for athletes too. Athletes can alkalize their bodies, improve and maintain their hydration levels, and reduce performance-robbing muscular acidosis by drinking alkaline water. For athletes that work out at high intensity, alkaline water offers a competitive edge that can push your workout to the next level.

alkaline water for sports performance

Alkaline water and Sports hydration

Alkaline water hydrates you - and rehydrates you - faster and more thoroughly than plain water. Research conducted on athletes and firefighters who have worked themselves into a state of dehydration shows that their bodies rehydrated a lot faster and more thoroughly with alkaline water compared to when they drank plain water. Your athletic performance begins to noticeably decline with as little as 2% dehydration. Alkaline water’s superior hydrating ability ensures that you can delay hitting that 2% dehydration level, and maintain maximum performance longer.

Research on alkaline water for hydration

Alkaline water and electrolytes - the ultimate sports drink: One of the main factors that limits how hard you can work out is that you only have so much stamina before you "bonk" and your performance then drops off. But a breakthrough study called "Drinks with alkaline negative oxidative reduction potential improve exercise performance in physically active men and women: double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial of efficacy and safety" found that if you mix alkaline water with a powdered electrolyte, such as Gatorade, you can drastically boost your stamina, and work out harder, faster, and longer than you could if you mixed Gatorade or some other powdered electrolyte with plain water.

The antioxidant power of alkaline water unlocks the full potential of electrolytes. The study looked at what property of alkaline water unlocked the full potential of Gatorade (the electrolyte used in the study) and researchers concluded it was the alkaline water’s antioxidant potential. The study authors concluded that the higher the antioxidant potential of the alkaline water, the greater effect it would have on the athletes performance

Note: The author of this report uses alkaline water mixed with electrolytes in high-intensity martial arts training, and swears by it. The following advice shares what the author has learned about optimizing your performance using alkaline water and electrolytes and information from the above named study.

How to make and use alkaline water plus electrolytes for the ultimate sports drink

Before workout: Use alkaline water with the highest pH and antioxidant ORP you can get. This will be level 4 on your alkaline water machine. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the powdered electrolyte you choose and mix it with 16 ounces of alkaline water. Start drinking it about 10 minutes before you start your workout. Drink as you normally would, there is no benefit to chugging it!

Drink only one alkaline water/electrolyte mixture per workout. If you need more alkaline water during your workout, drink straight level 4 alkaline water (highest pH and ORP) for the rest of your workout. Drink normally, over consumption of any kind of water is dangerous and will adversely affect your performance.

Alkaline water ultimate workout routine

  • • Weigh yourself before working out. Record the results
  • • Mix 16 ounce level 4 alkaline water and a powdered electrolyte drink mix
  • • Start drinking it 10 minutes before you work out
  • • After you finish the mix, switch to straight level 4 alkaline water for the rest of your workout

After your workout, make sure you rehydrate thoroughly for maximum recovery!

Research on alkaline water for rehydration

Post workout: A clinical study conducted at Montana State University compared the rehydration rates for cyclists subjected to a dehydrating bout of cycling when they drank alkaline water versus when those same cyclists drank plain water. The study, called: "Influence of bottled water on rehydration following a dehydrating bout of cycling exercise." The researchers found that drinking alkaline water produced: "significantly less urine output, a tendency for more water to be retained in the blood, and a higher overall water retention rate over the placebo water". The higher rate of water retention was credited to the alkaline water: "consumption of the experimental bottled (alkaline) water following a dehydrating bout of exercise provided faster and more complete rehydration to cyclists than the highly-filtered bottled water".

How to use alkaline water for sports rehydration

In the study, an alkaline water with a pH of 10.0 was used. The cyclists drank 16 ounces of alkaline water after their workout to rehydrate. You are fully rehydrated when you reach your pre-workout weight.

  • • Use alkaline water with a pH of 10.0 or higher
  • • Drink at least 16 ounces after your workout, more if needed
  • • Weigh yourself to ensure that you’ve returned to your pre-workout weight

Why you need a water ionizer for best results

If you’ve read over the recommendations in this report, you know that you need to be drinking at least 2 liters per day of alkaline water for best results. The pH of the water you drink will vary, and you need alkaline water with antioxidant potential to get the results that were reported in many of the studies quoted in this report. Because of all this, a water ionizer is your best choice for alkaline water
